Smile-Friendly Summer Snacks

Summer is almost here and while that can mean a host of different things, there’s certainly one that first comes to our mind: delicious food! If you have a child who’s wearing braces though, it can unfortunately limit the amount of options that he or she has. Not to worry though! We at Epic Orthodontics are glad to be more than just your choice for a Granbury and Weatherford orthodontist; we want to help you and your child through this orthodontic process in every way that we can – including food recommendations! We’d like to provide you with a few of our favorite smile-friendly recipes that you can make for your child with braces for the upcoming season.

California Smoothie

If your child’s looking to cool off in this warm summer weather, why not use this California smoothie to do the trick? This fruity smoothie isn’t just delicious – it’s healthy as well. Whether it’s part of a meal, a snack, or just a way to beat the heat, this smoothie will make a great addition to your child’s summer day.

  • 7 large strawberries

  • 1 (8 ounce) container lemon yogurt

  • 1/3 cup orange juice

Place strawberries in a plastic container and freeze for about an hour.

In a blender, combine frozen strawberries, yogurt and orange juice. Blend until smooth. Pour into a tall glass and serve.

Southern Deviled Eggs

These southern deviled eggs aren’t only a great side dish, but they make a great snack between meals as well. These delightfully gooey eggs are sweet enough to appeal to just about any child. For children who are pickier eaters though, you may want to leave out the olives in this recipe.

  • 8 hard-cooked eggs, peeled and sliced in half lengthwisepasted image 0

  • 2 tablespoons mayonnaise

  • 1 teaspoon prepared yellow mustard

  • 1 teaspoon spicy brown mustard

  • 1 pinch ground black pepper

  • 1/8 teaspoon distilled white vinegar

  • 1/8 teaspoon white sugar

  • ¼ teaspoon sweetened condensed milk, or more to taste

  • ¼ teaspoon paprika for garnish

  • 16 slices black olives

Scoop yolks from egg halves into a bowl. Mash the yolks with mayonnaise, yellow mustard, spicy brown mustard, black pepper, white vinegar, sugar, and sweetened condensed milk until the mixture is smooth. Spoon yolk filling into egg halves and sprinkle each deviled egg with paprika; top deviled eggs with 2 slices of black olive.

Blueberry Lemon Bread

What would a list of smile-friendly snacks be without dessert? For an after-meal treat, try this blueberry lemon bread recipe. It’s perfect for a sweet tooth and it’s soft enough to practically melt in a person’s mouth, making it a safe choice if your child has braces.

  • 1/3 cup butter, melted

  • 1 cup white sugar

  • 1 lemon, juiced

  • 2 eggs

  • 1 ½ cups all-purpose flour

  • 1 teaspoon baking powder

  • ½ teaspoon salt

  • ½ cup milk

  • 2 tablespoons lemon zest

  • 1 cup fresh blueberries

  • 2 tablespoons lemon juice

  • ¼ cup white sugar

Preheat oven to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C). Grease and flour an 8x4-inch loaf pan.

In a medium bowl, mix flour, baking powder and salt together and set aside.

In a large bowl, cream the butter and 1 cup sugar until light and fluffy. Add eggs, beating well after each addition. Mix in the juice of 1 lemon. Add the flour mixture, alternating with the milk. Fold in the lemon zest and blueberries. Pour into prepared pan.

Bake for 60 to 70 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean.

For the glaze, combine 1/4 cup sugar with 2 tablespoons lemon juice. Drizzle over bread while still warm.
