Your smile is the first thing people notice when they meet you – and at Epic Orthodontics, our mission is to make sure the first thing they notice about you looks healthy and beautiful! As an experienced, family-friendly orthodontic practice treating patients throughout the Granbury and Weatherford areas, we provide high-quality orthodontic treatment while maintaining a warm, welcoming office environment. Braces, Invisalign, and the other orthodontic treatments we provide in our office are critical to the health of your smile, but equally important is your dental hygiene – and that starts at home.

The Importance of Oral Hygiene

While braces are important for correct alignment of the teeth, they're useless if the teeth themselves aren't healthy. The most important part of keeping teeth healthy is your oral hygiene regimen, and maintaining a diligent, conscientious oral hygiene routine will help ensure the success of your treatment and keep your smile healthy and beautiful for years to come. Without proper oral hygiene, you're putting your teeth at risk of decay and cavities.

This is because when naturally occurring bacteria in the mouth interact with sugars and carbohydrates in food, they break these compounds down into corrosive acids. The acids eat away at tooth enamel, eventually leading to tooth decay, cavities, and gum disease. Regular, consistent oral hygiene is the only way to prevent acids from building up and protect your teeth from decay.

Oral Hygiene with Braces

When you're wearing braces, oral hygiene is even more important than normal. The nooks and crannies in braces offer the perfect place for bacteria and plaque to accumulate, putting your teeth at increased risk of decay. While wearing braces, you should aim for a more comprehensive oral hygiene regimen:

  • Brush your teeth at least four times a day with fluoridated toothpaste – once after every meal and once before bed.

  • Floss daily using a floss threader.

  • Avoid sugary, carbohydrate-rich foods or any foods that are sticky, gooey, crunchy, or hard.

  • Stop using any tobacco products – smoked or smokeless.
